The princess cut (also called square modified brilliant) is a square stone with brilliant-style facets. Introduced in the 1980s, it became the second most popular engagement ring cut after round brilliant. Because princess cuts retain more of the rough crystal during cutting, they are typically less expensive than round brilliants at the same carat weight.
