The pear cut (also known as teardrop) is among the most distinctive of all diamond shapes — combining the brilliant sparkle of a round cut at one end with the pointed elongation of a marquise at the other.
There is no single correct answer, but tradition and most contemporary styling places the point of the pear cut away from the hand (toward the fingernail), with the rounded base closer to the palm. This orientation maximises the elongating effect on the finger and is how most major jewelers and editorial images present pear solitaires. Some wearers reverse this for deliberate contrast or personal preference — the point toward the palm creates a less conventional look that some find equally appealing. Neither is wrong; the choice is purely aesthetic.
The bowtie effect is a dark shadow that appears in the center of certain fancy-shape brilliant-cut stones (oval, pear, marquise) when light enters the stone at specific angles. It results from the geometry of the facet pattern and is not a flaw — it is inherent to the cut. Higher-quality cuts minimise the bowtie while lower-quality cuts exaggerate it.
